Depuis plusieurs années, vous savez à quel point je prends la musique country au sérieux et à quel point j’aime la musique de Noël, alors le mélange des deux est comme le paradis pour moi! Vous savez aussi sans doute que pour moi, c’est très facile de dire si j’aime un album ou non, dire les meilleures chansons (mes favorites), mais jamais je n’écris de critiques de disques, je crois que c’est parce que c’est trop sérieux pour moi… ou même peut-être par peur de me faire critiquer… même si je garderais mon opinion quand même! J’ai aussi l’impression que je ne sais pas quoi dire… je ne peux pas toujours trouver les mots pour dire ce que je pense et ça me rend la tâche assez difficile. Alors me voici, je me lance dans ce qui se veut une critique, mais aussi un simple message d’amour pour une musique agréable à entendre!

Je suis la carrière de Julie Roberts depuis son premier “Break Down Here” et j’aime beaucoup ses chansons. Elle est une artiste qui est demeurée “country”, même quand tous les autres s’en allaient plus vers la pop. Bravo! Elle nous a offert deux albums et ensuite, elle a disparu de la scène musicale… jusqu’à ce qu’elle revienne en force avec l’album ALIVE en début d’année. C’est une artiste que je respecte énormément, et pas juste pour tout ce qu’elle a vécu. Elle est sincère dans la vie comme dans sa musique, elle parle avec ses fans sur Facebook et elle est toujours très généreuse! C’est certain qu’elle ne peut plaire à tous. Pour certains ce seront son style trop country, pour d’autres ça pourrait être sa voix, j’en sais rien… Tout ce que je sais, c’est qu’elle a beaucoup de talent et qu’elle passe trop inaperçue et c’est très dommage! Ai-je mentionné, messieurs, qu’elle est vraiment belle???

Cette fois, même pas un an après la sortie de son 3e album ALIVE, elle nous offre un EP de Noël, qui s’intitule “Who Needs Mistletoe” (qui a besoin de feuille de guï). Sur cet album, on ne retrouve que des classiques de Noël, à part la pièce titre. Je crois que pour n’importe qui, entendre des classiques de Noël, peut réveiller des souvenirs de jeunesse. Par exemple, lorsqu’on emballe des cadeaux, qu’on fait le sapin, qu’on cuisine et que l’odeur rempli la maison… C’est exactement ce que cet album nous procure comme sensation!

La pièce titre a été co-écrite par Julie Roberts et le producteur de la collection, Jason Collum. Julie a aussi co-produit le projet! C’est une chanson un peu… osée, mais elle est bien écrite et bien produite et ça devrait être une chanson qu’on entend sur toutes les radios country dans le temps des fêtes! Pour ce qui est des 6 autres chansons, on peut entendre “Blue Christmas” (un classique d’Elvis) et personnellement, j’ai toujours ADORÉ cette chanson et c’est difficile de trouver d’extrêmement bonnes versions de cette chanson. Julie Roberts en fait une merveilleuse…avec beaucoup “d’âme, si je peux m’exprimer ainsi. Sur ma liste de “bonnes versions”, on retrouve aussi celle de Vince Gill, qui donne un tout autre sentiment à cette pièce!

On peut aussi entendre “Pretty Paper”, une chanson que j’ai toujours connu par Willie Nelson. Willie Nelson est un être et artiste tellement particulier, qu’il peut être épeurant de refaire…Mais Julie Roberts attaque cette chanson comme si elle était sienne. Il faut dire que quand on grandi avec la musique country, on connait très bien la version de Nelson et ça devient un classique! Alors un autre point pour elle!

“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” est une chanson que j’ai toujours beaucoup aimé et celle-ci a été refaite par pas mal tous les artistes, alors quand un artiste l’enregistre, je ne sais pas si il le demande s’il devrait la faire classique ou différemment… ? De toutes façons, en entendant la version de Roberts, on peut entendre à quel point il y a de l’amour dans cette affirmation.

Ça continue avec “O Holy Night”, que nous connaissons en français comme étant “Minuit Chrétien” et on sait à quel point cette chanson est poignante. Elle l’est tout autant cette fois. Julie a une facilité à communiquer ses sentiments avec sa voix et c’est vraiment ce qui rend chaque chanson spéciale. C’est le genre de chanson qui peut faire pleurer n’importe qui. Ça me touche beaucoup. Surtout quand on pense à quel point les valeurs se perdent depuis plusieurs années, ça rend le tout un peu plus important à mes yeux, étant donné que j’ai de jeunes enfants. Je veux garder les traditions de Noël et qu’ils comprennent que Noël, ce n’est pas juste une fête de cadeaux!

Ensuite vient “Away in a Manger”, qui est une de mes chansons favorites en anglais. Une autre version que j’aime beaucoup de cette chanson est cette de Brad Paisley, à cause de la “pesanteur” dans la musique. J’ai l’impression qu’il nous commande d’écouter! Je trouve ça super qu’elle ait choisi cette pièce puisque c’est comme entendre un ange chanter! Pour moi, c’est un pur moment de bonheur!

Finalement, cet album EP nous offre “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”, qui est la chanson par excellence à faire jouer durant un party de Noël. C’est une chanson que tout le monde connait et je ne crois pas en avoir entendu de mauvaises versions. Julie Roberts ne fait pas exception. Elle nous l’interprète avec beaucoup de sincérité!

Quand on sait que les albums de Noël doivent être généralement enregistrés durant la saison chaude, je crois que ça prend une toute autre signification. On voit à quel point c’est important pour les artistes de nous offrir ce qu’ils font de meilleur! Il n’est pas rare que les artistes décorent les studios d’enregistrement avec des lumières de Noël, pour se mettre dans l’ambiance! Je trouve ça génial! Cet album est parfait pour moi et je crois qu’il peut aussi l’être pour vous, si vous lui donnez sa chance! Son seul bémol… c’est qu’il n’y a pas assez de chansons…mais bon, c’est extrêmement dispendieux de produire un disque et nous avons déjà la chance d’avoir 7 chansons…

You know how much respect I have for country music and how much I love Christmas music..well for me, the combination of the two is just like Heaven! You must also know how easy it is for me to say if I love an album or not and which songs are my favorites and the best ones (in my humble opinion), but I’ve never written a real review. I must say that I think it’s a bit too serious for me or maybe I’m afraid of not finding the right words to describe what’s in my head, or even that I’m afraid of being criticizes for what I think, even if it would not change my ming. Anyways, here it is, my first attempt at a review, but might just simply be a word of love for some great music to listen to.

I’ve been following Julie Roberts’ career since she first came out with “Break Down Here” and I love her material. She is an artist who stayed country, when all the others were leaning towards pop. NICE! She offred us two albums, then kind of vanished for a while. She came back this year with a great new album ALIVE. She is an artist whom I respect very much and not only for what she’s lived through. She’s very sincere in her music, just as she is in life and she takes the time to talk with her fans on Facebook and she’s always generous. Off course, she can’t please everyone…Some might not like her style, whether she’s too country or they don’t like the songs she picks, for some other, it might be her voice. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. All I know is that I find she has a lot of talent, a great voice and it’s sad that people don’t notice her ENOUGH. And guys, did I mention she was really beautiful too?

This time, she comes back, not even a year after the release of her 3rd album, with a Christmas EP, titled “Who Needs Mistletoe”. On this collection, we can find all classics, along with a new tune, the title track. This kind of music will bring back memories of listening to Christmas music while wrapping presents, decorating the tree, cooking with mom… It just does, it’s like being a kid again!!!

The title track with co-written by her and producer Jason Collum. Julie also co-produced the album. The title track is a little… what’s the word in English… suggestive, but it’s well written and well-produced and should be playing on all country radio…during the Holidays off course! As for the other 6 songs, we can listen to “Blue Christmas” (an Elvis classic). I’ve always loved that song and it’s hard to find a really great cover of it. Julie Roberts offers us a very soulful version of it and that is just perfect! The only other version worth listening to besides Julie’s is Vince Gill’s version, but with Gill, it just takes a whole other meaning. The feeling of the song is completely different!

We can also hear “Pretty Paper”, which is a song I’ve always known by Willie Nelson. Willie Nelson is a very particular artist, which a special voice and it can be scary to try to redo this song. But Julie Roberts attacks the song like it’s her own. When you’ve been brought up with country music, it’s hard not to know the song and it’s a classic! Another point for her!

“I’ll Be Home For Christmas” is a song I’ve always adored and was redone by many many artists. I wonder if an artists asks himself if it should be remade the classic way or should it be done in a new way. Anyways, we can hear how much love there is in her delivery and it’s impressive!

We keep going with “O Holy Night” which we’ve always know and loved. We all know how poignant this song is. It is again with Julie. She has this ease with communicating her feelings and emotions through her voice and that’s what makes every song so special. It’s the kind of song that can make anybody cry! It touches me. I find that now, people sort of have lost values and traditions and it saddens me and scares me because I have small children and for me, it’s important for me that they know tradition and that Christmas is not about the presents!

“Away in a Manger” is another song you can listen to on this great EP. And it’s one of my favorites. Another version of it that I love is Brad Paisley’s version, because of the “heaviness” of the instrumentation…It’s like it orders us to listen to the song. I love the fact that she chose this great song. I love the way she interprets it with such soul and grace. For me, it’s a moment of pure happiness.

Finally, the EP offers “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”, which is like the perfect song for a Christmas party. It’s a song everyone knows and not many people have not remade it at one time in their careers and did an amazing job with it. Julie is no exception. She delivers it with a lot of sincerity.

We know how hard it must be to record Christmas albums in the middle of the Summer so we know how hard the artists work to produce them. They put themselves in the mood with Christmas lights and all. I find it great! This album is perfect for me and probably will be for you too. My only down side is there’s not enough songs… but then again, it’s so expensive to produce music, I’m happy she has one out!
